JULIUS VINCENT SY GETS PETER O'HALLORAN CERTIFICATE

Sep 02, 2009

Though getting a perfect score may not be an easy promise for most math whiz kids, yet to some of them who are guided with very clear purpose and unshaken determination, achieving a perfect score is a dream within a grasp. As a Swedish proverb says, “Those who wish to sing, always find a song” is a food for thought for those math wizards who have the same dream not just to be top scorer but to be perfect scorer as well. From the several thousands of participants worldwide, only eleven of them perfected the test in the 2009 Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) held simultaneously around the world on Thursday, August 6, 2009.

Julius Vincent Sy, a 2nd year student of St Stephen's High School is one of them who stood for something and soared for something as well when he led the more than 2000 Philippine participants in the 2009 AMC. He obtained a perfect score in the Junior Division, thus making him a recipient of the Peter O'Halloran Certificate.

Other Philippine AMC participants who made it to receive medals are Seanne Daphne Ng, 1st year student of Saint Jude Catholic School, Justin Edric Yturzaeta, 1st year student Jubilee Christian Academy and Amiel Sy, 3rd year student of Philippine Science High School Main Campus. They are few of the number of students who met the demanding standards required to win a medal.

The AMC tests everything through from basic numeracy skills through to advanced problem solving.

No less than Prof. Peter Taylor, the Executive Director of the Australian Mathematics Trust will be awarding the recipients of the AMC medals on Monday, October 19, 2009.

Dr. Simon L. Chua, MTG President, is leading the MTG family in congratulating the Filipino winners in the 2009 AMC. He quoted, “To be successful, you must decide exactly what you want to accomplish, then resolve to pay the price to get it”.  Moreover, the role of the DOST-SEI from administering the competition to acknowledging the achievements of the winners has been instrumental for the success of the 2009 AMC in the Philippines.
