MATH WHIZ KID WINS MEDAL IN 2012 EUCLID CONTEST

The Center for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) of the University of Waterloo announced the winners of the 2012 Euclid Mathematics Contest given in May 2012. The contest participated in by a total of approximately 14000 students from 1200 schools worldwide gave way to the emergence of 10 Filipino math wizards to receive a medal and certificates of distinction.
 
Brandon Chan of Philippine Cultural College-Annex was declared school champion, making him to be the lone recipient of the contest medal for scoring the highest among the Filipino participants.
 
Winning the certificate of distinction for ranking in the top 25% of all the contestants were Russelle Guadalupe and Mikel Jason Allas of Valenzuela City Science High School, Reine Jiana Reynoso and Joelle Peña of Philippine Science High School-Main Campus, John Thomas Chuatak and Dielle Tio of St. Stephen's High School, Deany Hendrick Cheng of Grace Christian College,Mikaela Angelina Uy of St. Jude Catholic School and Rachel Rojo of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School.
 
Euclid Contest, administered for 2.5 hours, consists of 10 questions, each worth 10 points, for a total of 100 points. The questions are divided into answers only and full solution parts. Marks for the full solution are assigned for form and style of presentation, as well as for answers.
 
Most of the problems are based on the mathematical curriculum. A list of possible topics includes:
Euclidean and analytic geometry, trigonometry, including functions, graphs, identities, sine and      cosine laws, exponential and logarithmic functions, functional notation, systems of equations, polynomials, including relationships involving the roots of quadratic and cubic equations, the remainder theorem, sequences and series, simple counting problems and properties of numbers.
