The Center for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) of the University of Waterloo in Canada has disclosed that from the approximately 64,728 participants worldwide, 187 of them were Filipinos who made it in the top 25% in each contest of the 2010 Canadian Mathematics Competition. This year the Pinoy whiz kids were able to grab 80 certificates of distinction in Pascal Contest, 58 in Cayley Contest and 49 in Fermat Contest.
Leading the list of Filipino winners who are entitled to receive medals other than the certificates of distinctions are Zheng Rong Wu of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School for Fermat Contest, Nathaniel Ryan Ang of Xavier School for Pascal Contest and Angelique Ulep of Makati Science High School for Cayley Contest. They had not only met the minimum standard mark but topped the contest as well.
With this achievement, no less than Prof. Ian Vander Burgh, Director of CEMC has extended his congratulations to the winners and his appreciation to the teachers for their effort in preparing the students for these contests. Meanwhile, Dr. Simon Chua also has expressed his pleasure about the results and has challenged the other participants to do better than their best in next year’s Canadian Mathematics Contest.
