Sean Anderson Ty, Grade 12, of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School has notched up a proud record of achievement after winning a gold medal in the 2018 China West Mathematics Invitational (CWMI) held at Hainan Middle School, Haikou Hainan Province, China on August 13 – 18, 2018.
Ty who claimed the same medal in the same contest last year said, “A successful competition for me is always going out there and putting 100 percent into whatever I’m doing. It’s not always winning”.
In 2017, he was a member of the Philippine team bringing home a bronze medal, making him the first student in Mindanao to win a medal from the world’s toughest contest, the International Mathematics Olympiad.
Following closely behind him are the two silver medalists, Fedrick Lance Lim from Zamboanga Chong Hua High school and Charles Justin Shi from Philippine Cultural College – Caloocan.
The China West Mathematics Invitational which adheres to the ideals of the IMO is another hard math contest in China. If anyone wants a medal in this contest, he will have to find a way of beating the best with one’s personal best.
This year, the CWMI gave out 32 gold, 29 silver and 25 bronze medals to the winners from these participating countries: Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and 19 provinces of China.
