Four Filipino mathletes toughed it out, this time, walking away with 1 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze medals from the recently concluded 25th Junior Balkan Mathematical Olympiad (JBMO) hosted and organized online by The Mathematical Society of the Republic of Moldova on July 1, 2021.
Highlighting the best version of himself is Mohammad Nur Casib – Grade 8 – Philippine Science High School – Central Mindanao Campus for etching his name as the only Asian to get his hands on the coveted gold medal. It is the country’s second since Andres Rico Gonzales III won it in 2016.
Here’s more to the glorious feat! The Philippines garnered two silver medals courtesy of Ephraim Filbert Wu – Grade 10 – Victory Christian International School and Ervin Joshua Bautista – Grade 8 – Southville International School and Colleges; and one bronze medal brought home by Armea Helena Sien Dimayacyac – Grade 9 – Philippine Science High School Main Campus.
The MTG Philippines will reward Mohammad Nur Casib with Php10,000.00 for his exceptional performance, Php5000.00 for each silver medalist and Ph3000.00 for the bronze medalist.
Two more Filipino math wizards whose participation in this year’s JBMO had been an animating force that led the entire team on the road to success are Alexandra Brienne Gochian of St. Jude Catholic School and John David Magnaye of Philippine Science High School – Main Campus.
A special mention goes to Ms. Hazel Joy Shi, Mr. Zheng Rong Wu and Mr. Renard Eric Chua for the intellectual nourishment afforded to the Filipino math wizards and for helping out in the coordination of papers.
The JBMO drew participants from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Republic of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Turkey; and guest teams from Azerbaijan, Croatia, France, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
