Dr. Simon L. Chua , President of Mathematics Trainers’ Guild (MTG), Philippines and Principal of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School has been chosen as one of the three winners of 2006 Paul Erdos Award. This has been disclosed by Dr. Petar S. Kenderov, President of the World Federation of National Mathematics Competitions (WFNMC) based in Sofia, Bulgaria.

This makes Dr. Simon L. Chua the first Filipino to receive this esteemed honor. This prestigious international award was established to recognize contributions of mathematicians around the world who have played a significant role over a number of years in the development of mathematical challenges at the national level, which have been a stimulus for the enrichment of mathematics learning. The rationale for naming the award in honor of Paul Erdos was the extraordinary contribution to the learning of mathematics. Dr. Chua’s impressive records of achievements range from his authorship of several mathematics books under Phoenix Publishing House and SIBS Publishing House to his being founder and president of the MTG. His other important contributions were the countless seminars and trainings conducted for teachers and mathematically gifted kids who, in turn, garnered remarkable awards, commendations, and recognitions from various international competitions.

Just recently, Dr. Chua invited five internationally known speakers in the MTG/DOST-SEI Mathematics Conference held on October 20-22, 2005, Bayview Park Hotel, Manila. The conference coincided with the grand celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the MTG, Philippines.

The two other recipients of the 2006 Paul Erdos Award are Ali Rejali of Iran and Alexander Soifer of the United States of America.
