Nov 15, 2008

The Philippine team won 14 medals at the 2008 International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) for Primary School in Lombok Island Indonesia on November 13, 2008. It brought together about 200 elementary school students from 12 countries, including Brunei Darussalam, Hong Kong, India, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nigeria, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Indonesia.

The Philippines sent a team composed of 24 elementary school students, that is, fifteen for mathematics and nine for science to compete in this year's IMSO. The IMSO Math Contest is an individual competition on problem solving which consists of two parts, Theoretical and Exploration Problems while IMSO Science Contest concentrates on Theoretical and Experimental Problems.

As for mathematics, the Philippines sent fifteen participants, eight of whom sent by the MTG, Philippines and seven by the Department of Education. As usual in almost all competitions, MTG trainees had always made their way out to score clean sweep with silver and bronze medals. This year, two promising MTG mathletes from St. Stephen's High School, Sterling Alvin Tiu and John Thomas Chuatak garnished their chests with silver medals.

A total of seven young Pinoy math wizards wrapped up the contest with bronze medals. They were Andrew Lawrence Sy and Adrian Reginald Sy of St. Jude Catholic School, Prince Michael Balanay of Colegio San Agustin-Biñan, Kaye Janelle Yao, Grace Christian College, Marc Patrick Celon of Diliman Preparatory School, Jason Joseph Fernandez of San Beda College - Alabang, and Romero Larco III of Jose Rizal Memorial School.

Furthermore, the Philippines had been represented by seven DepEd and two MTG participants for the IMSO-Science. Shining as the gold in her hand was Bianca Mae Malaluan of St. Bridget College, Batangas City while Lara Andrea Montales of Colegio San Agustin-Makati posed convincingly with her silver medal. Leander Quilang of Tuguegarao West Central School, Joseph Anthony Chang of Jose Rizal Memorial School and Kristina Renolayan of Integrated Montessori Center, Calamba, Laguna had settled for bronze medals.

The other delegates who participated in 2008 IMSO were Neil Gabrielle Anacay, Elessar Miguel Austria, Jelyn Bandojo, Ryan III Corpuz, Carl Dave Carurucan, Ian Philip Dimalanta, Angelica Marie Dedase, Jasper Amadeus Opulencia and Jalan Joy Umbina,

Mrs. Rechilda P. Villame, MTG Vice President headed other MTG officials such as Dr. Archieval Rodriguez and Mr. Nicolai Christian Vasquez. They were with a score of DepEd officials who went to observe and witness the 2008 International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) for Primary School.

Dr. Simon Chua, MTG President, is pleased with results and he congratulates the winners for proving once more the winning spirit of the Filipino youths. Dr. Chua says, "our kids can always make a difference if they are only given the right training".
