RP KID PERFECTS SCORE IN HONG KONG MATH CONTEST

To get a perfect score in any contest is almost next to impossible, but not to a 13- year old Adrian Reginald Sy, Grade 6 student of St. Jude Catholic School who impressed the participants from 14 countries when he stood among the handful of perfect scorers during the recently concluded 13th Po Leung Kuk Primary Mathematics World Contest (PMWC).

His exceptional performance, which made him garner the only gold for the country, had placed the Philippines 2nd Place in the overall ranking.

From the 14-member Philippine math team, two hauled silver medals while the eight others bagged bronze medals in the individual category. This year, the silver awardees were Farrell Eldrian Wu of MGC New Life Christian Academy in Taguig and Thomas Chuatak of St. Stephen’s High School-Manila.

The bronze went to Andrew Lawrence Sy of St. Jude Catholic School, Ethan Riley Chan of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School, Ezekiel Christian Ong of UNO High School, Rafael Jose Santiago of PAREF- Southridge School, John Angel Aranas of Makati Science High School, Francis Concepcion of Philippine Cultural College, Benedict Ryan Tiu of St. Stephen’s High School and Clyde Wesley Ang of Chiang Kai College.

Furthermore, Philippine Team A (Metro Manila) composed of John Thomas Chuatak, Andrew Lawrence Sy, Adrian Reginald Sy and Farrel Eldrian Wu was placed 1st runner up in overall champion for group category. In the team competition, Team A was 2nd Runner up while Team C (Visayas) made up of Jason Carlo Carranceja- Grace Christian College, Clyde Wesley Ang, Jasper John Segismundo- Pasig Catholic School and Allen Cedrick Domingo- San Beda College- Alabang received the Merit award.

The other member of the RP team, Jimuel Lara of UP Integrated school was instrumental in giving victory to the Philippines. Dr. Simon Chua, MTG president said that “the clearly defined goals of our young math wizards are what keep them focused; their feet on the ground”.

Aside from the Philippines and the host, Hong Kong, other countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Macau, Bulgaria, South Africa, Russia, China, Taiwan and the United States of America had traveled all the way from their places to bring their best math wizards for the 13th Po Leung Kuk Primary Mathematics World Contest.
