6 PINOY MATH WHIZ KIDS GET PERFECT SCORE IN AMC 8

The Mathematical Association of America announced that six Filipino kids will be awarded with First Place certificates and winner pins for achieving perfect scores in the 2010 American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) 8 conducted in November last year. 

The AMC 8 participants from the Philippines ranged from grades 5, 6 pupils to 1st and 2nd year high school students. 

Making the country proud for their excellent achievement are the perfect scorers: Ma. Czarina Lao, Seanne Ng and Andrew Lawrence Sy of St. Jude Catholic School.  Mark Davidson Cua of Pangasinan Universal Institute,Charles Ngo of Leyte Progressive High School and Gen Mark Tanno of Southville International School.  

Moreover, the five others will receive Second Place certificates plus AMC winner pins for almost perfecting the AMC 8. They are Adrian Sy of St. Jude Catholic School, Jervis Chua of Philippine Cultural College, Janella Umbinaof Special Education Center for the Gifted, Kelsey Lim Tiong Soon andBenson Tan of Jubilee Christian Academy. 

The recipients of the Third Place certificates and winner pins are Alysza Me Carballo and Arvin Diaz of Special Education Center for the Gifted, Darren Khow, Martin Koa, Vince Say and Matthew Tan St. Jude Catholic School,Adrian Jude Jumangit- Philippine Science High School- Main Campus, Jose Mirabueno- Philippine Science High School - Southern Mindanao Campus,Rigil Kent Olegario- Camiling Central Elementary School-Tarlac, Edgar Osis- Colegio San Agustin- Biñan, Mario Ongkiko- Xavier School, Sterling Tiu- St. Stephen High School, Nathaniel De Ocampo of Placido Del Mundo Elementary school and John Aries Hingan of San Beda College-Alabang. 

The AMC 8 is a 25 question, 40 minute multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem solving skills. The examination provides an opportunity to apply the concepts taught at the junior high level to problems which not only range from easy to difficult but also cover a wide range of applications. Many problems are designed to challenge students and to offer problem solving experiences beyond those provided in most junior high school mathematics classes.
