Just two and only two Filipino math aces from the chosen few seized the opportunity and braved out the challenge of one of the hardest math contests in the world, earning their stripes and striking a medal each in the China West Mathematical Olympiad (CMWO) held at Jiu Long Po District, ChongQing Province, China on August 14 – 18, 2014.
Their penchant for numbers steamed up, not in fits and starts, but nearly incessant as these two math whiz kids stood a chance of winning medals from a contest whose problems were the most difficult in the past twelve years.
Fighting his way to the top of the heap and stayed there as gold star was Clyde Wesley Ang, grade 9, from Chiang Kai Shek College. He was one of the 33 gold medalists from more than 200 participants from 9 countries.
Making his name in this challenge as bronze medalist was Albert John Patupat, grade 8, from Holy Rosary College. He, too, was in the short list who won a bronze this year.
Both Ang and Patupat were awarded gold medals in the key stage III in the Korea Mathematics International Competition held in Daejeon County, Korea in July this year.
The CMWO participants from China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines and Singapore had to bear up the four mind-boggling problems in 4 hours per day for two consecutive days.
Dr. Simon Chua, MTG president, the only person who accompanied the two Filipino math aces in the CMWO, expressed his satisfaction at how Ang and Patupat fared in the contest. Dr. Chua aid, “It's one’s aptitude, not just the attitude that determines one’s ultimate altitude”.
