Colegio de San Juan de Letran student Andres Rico M. Gonzales III topped the 20th Junior Balkan Mathematical Olympiad (JBMO) 2016 held last June 24 – 29, at Slatina, Romania.
Garnering the highest score among the participants from the guest countries, Gonzales earned the Gold medal while team mate Ryan mark Shao of Xavier School took the Silver. Meanwhile, Steven T. Reyes and Stefan Marcus Ong, both of St. Jude Catholic School, and Dion Stephan Ong of Ateneo De manila Junior High School were awarded bronze.
This year’s JBMO, organized by the Romanian mathematical Scociety under the auspices of the Romanian Ministry of National Education, had a total of 120 participants clustered into 20 teams.
Among the participating Balkan countries were: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Turkey and Romania.
Guest countries included Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Turkmenistan, Saudi Arabia, Philippines, France, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, and Alutus.
The Philippine lineup was under its team leader Mr. Zheng Rong Wu, a medalist of several international math contests himself. Also a member of the Philippine team was William King of Bethany Christian School.
These math wizards were coached and trained by the following MTG elite group, Kirish Villegas, Renard Eric Chua, Gari Lincoln Chua and of course Zheng Rong Wu, and by guest trainers from China Dr. Li Sheng Hong, Prof. Huang Xing and Prof. Tang Song Jin.
