PH WINS 23 MEDALS IN 14TH IMSO

A team mostly of sixth-graders from different schools in the Philippines were among the winners in the 14th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) for Primary School Students organized by the NUS High School of Math and Science and Ministry of Education, Singapore, held on November 20 – 24, 2017.

Competing against the various teams from 21 countries, the Philippine team joining the mathematics division won 2 gold, 5 silver, and 4 bronze medals while in the science division, our Filipino science aces sailed through bringing home 8 silver and four bronze medals, a total of 23 medals in the individual contest.

In the mathematics division, winning gold medals for the country are Alvann Walter W. Paredes Dy from St. Jude Catholic School and Christopher James C. Yap from St. John’s Institute, Bacolod City.

This year’s silver medalists are Cris Lorraine L. Dela Cruz from Bolinao Integrated School, Armea Helena Sien G. Dimayacyac from Notre Dame Of Greater Manila, Walsh Nico Adrian L. Letran from St. Jude Catholic School, John David F. Magnaye from Holy Rosary Academy Of Las Pinas City, and Ambrose James G. Torreon from Rainbow of Angels Learning Center, Inc – Butuan.

Earning bronze medals in the math contest are Kei Hang Derek H. Chan from St. Jude Catholic School, Krystal O. Lim Tiong Soon from Grace Christian College, Mayah Christine C. Lim from Notre Dame of Greater Manila, and Angelene Erika T. Madrazo from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School.

Nothing succeeds like success for the following top science contestants who found a place in the sun for winning silver medals: Dillon Keller C. Chan from UNO High School, Katrina Isabelle P. Dela Rama from Integrated Montessori Center – Taguig, John Florence A. Dizon from Calamba Elementary School – SSC, Juan Rafael M. Landicho from Stonyhurst Southville International School – Batangas, Jaime Iñigo M. Rojo from Special Education Center for the Gifted – Kalayaan, Hans Ethan Ting from Rainbow of Angels Learning Center Inc., Ziron John A. Valaquio from SPED Integrated School for Exceptional Children, and Chantal Paige U. Vargas from Ateneo de Zamboanga University.

The recipients of bronze medal in the science division are Sophia Monique O. Chan from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School, Marie Emmanuelle B. Martinez from University of the Philippines Integrated School, Tristan M. Mora from Bagong Tanyag Elementary School – Taguig, and Isabella Marie S. Reyes from De La Salle University Integrated School.

The 14th IMSO was participated in by teams from Brunei, Bulgaria, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Thailand, and Vietnam. 

The Philippine team was headed by Dr. Isidro Aguilar, MTG president, Mikaela Uy – Math tutor, Jonabel Quintana and Jay Gabata – Science tutors.
