Bryce Ainsley Sanchez, grade 10 from Grace Christian College has won a gold medal in 7th European Mathematical Cup (EMC), becoming the first entrant from a guest–participating country (non-European) qualified for a medal for ending the competition as the top overall in the Junior Division.
One of the EMC rules excludes guest or non European participant from earning a medal, yet Sanchez’ convincing victory in the contest allowed the organizers to soften the particular regulation because they can’t just turn a blind eye to his impressive performance which earned him the first prize.
The other winners from the Philippines in the junior division reaping second prize were Steven Reyes (G10) from Saint Jude Catholic School and Immanuel Josiah Balete (G10) from Saint Stephen’s High School while Vincent Dela Cruz (G10) from Valenzuela City School of Mathematics and Science brought home the third prize.
In the senior division, Andres Rico Gonzales III (G11) from De La Salle University Senior High School secured a striking first prize, another huge achievement added to his many celebrated feats in math contests. Winning second prize for the Philippines in this division is Sean Anderson Ty (G12) from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School.
This is the Philippines’ first participation in the EMC. This year, the EMC participants were from Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Kosovo, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Norway, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey, and guest countries, Iran, Philippines, United Kingdom, and United States of America.
Locally, the EMC was held simultaneously at Arellano University and Zamboanga Chong Hua High School last December 18, 2018.
