A group of Filipino students distinguished itself in one of Asia’s most attended math contests, the 16th Hanoi Open Mathematics Challenge sponsored jointly by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training and Hanoi Mathematics Society held on April 2 – 6, 2019.
The Philippines fielded a competitive team for the junior and senior divisions walked away with two gold, two silver and four bronze medals in the individual contest and trophies and a medal each for winning third prize in the team contest.
Bringing home a gold medal in the individual contest were Bryce Ainsley A. Sanchez, Grade 10 from Grace Christian College and Immanuel Josiah A. Balete, Grade 10, from St. Stephen’s High school, both participated in the senior division.
A silver medal was awarded to Enzo Rafael S. Chan, Grade 8 from Bayanihan Institute, Tarlac City and Rickson Caleb Y. Tan, Grade 8, from MGC New Life Christian Academy.
In addition, each of the following Filipino mathletes won bronze medal, Noel Stephen M. Dequito, Grade 8, from Xavier School Nuvali; Cassidy Kyler L. Tan, Grade 8, from Davao Christian High School; Daryll Carlsten L. Ko, Grade 10, from St. Stephen's High School; and Issam Wang, Grade 10, from Manila Science High School.
Our math wizards in each respective division won a trophy for finishing third and individually received a medal in the team contest.
Dr. Eduardo Dela Cruz, Jr., the vice president for training and development and Mr. Renard Chua, were the team leader and math tutor respectively in this year’s Hanoi Open Mathematics Challenge attended by these 14 countries: China, Hungary, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Poland, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Vietnam.
